We are moving from California where my horse doesn’t need to be blanketed to a climate where it gets very cold in the winter, sometimes below zero. We’ve never lived anywhere this cold. I believe she will acclimate, but for this first winter I want to keep her warm.
Any suggestions on what type of blanket I need to purchase? Brands? Types? What do I need to look for? She will not be in a barn, only have a basic covered stall.

My horse is outside all Winter with 18 other horses where the Winter nights can be 50f below zero. No blankets. Your horse has time to acclimate if your move is soon.
If it’ll be a later move I’d just find something with Thinsulate in it.
If you go back to the Pets category in Yahoo Answers you can ask this question in the Horse section instead of Other-Pets (Home>Pets>Horses). Other-Pets are more for Ferrets, Rabbits, Hampters.. there is an actual section for horses where you might find better info.
your horse can acclimate, but only if given enough time. Since she will be outside, in the elements, I would blanket her as you see fit- if she looks cold (shivering etc) with a blanket that it warm and waterproof. I personally love Weathabeeta and Rambo for good, sturdy, warm blankets. If a barn is available you might ask that she be brought nights in for a week or so to let her hair grow a bit before you toss a blanket on her, as she wont grow a wonderful fuzzy coat if she’s always blanketed regardless of how cold it gets.
Also, if she’s not used to the cold, monitor her carefully for water intake, changes in appetite and signs of colic.

Look for a blanket that is form fit…you don’t want those big floppy ones that hang all over your horse. They fall apart…and they are imported….not good materials. My horses live outside all winter long in sub zero minus temps. They do fine in these outside……
