I have a four year old quarter horse. She has a lot of fur during the winter. She stays out in a pasture with no shelter, and I don’t know whether to get a medium-weight, heavy-weight, or some other kind. I just want one to keep my horse warm and dry.
I can’t add a shelter because I keep her at a boarding stable.
It usually doesn’t get below 30 degrees except maybe at night.
Also, do you know of any good brands that aren’t too expensive? Or websites that sell blankets?

GET THE ONE WITH THE BIG **** STAIN ON IT! IT’S AWESOME!!!
Depends on how cold it gets. If it goes below 20 or 30 degrees often I would get a heavy weight. Where I live 20 is FREEZING, so we have medium weight. Normally heavy is your best bet though, better safe than sorry
eeew no shelter. can you make her a run in shed?? i believe in blankets (you don’t say what section of the country you are in) if it is very cold,id say 1200 denier 300 fill.
Try Equafleece, they are supposedly the best and our equine vet always uses those on his patients even our dog and some of her friends have them as they make them for dogs as well. Here is a link:
just get a light weight is your not gonna shave her. itll keep her dry and plently warm enough
Depends on how cold it gets, horses can survive in cold weather if they have a thick coat. Problem is, if you get them too warm, they can get sick. I would go with a light/med Waterproof, just to keep the wind off them, but not enough to make them shed. Horses usually stand outside anyway if the have a choice. Their haircoat will grow as they need it and if they are in good fat, they will be ok.

I would get a medium weight and a lighter one that is resistant from rain and wind. In the winter put on the medium weight one when it is cold or snowing hard or bad winds. The lighter one use for the summer when it is windy or rainy out. Most boarding places will put on and take off the blanket but check with the boarder first.
i would get a heavy wieght baker all the blankets i have for my horse are all bakers there great and last a very long time
Well, my horse has a light weight, medium, and heavy weight. I live in OR, so the weather is never consistant. I would get a light rain sheet and some stable blankets so you can layer.
they have tons
try the rider’s international blanket
It really depends on the consistency of the area you live, but it sounds like a medium-weight would do the job, as long as she’s not clipped. I live in NE PA, and my boy was warm with his fur and MW last winter. This winter, because I’m showing, he’s clipped and wears a MW all the time, sometimes layered with another MW stable blanket to keep him nice and toasty.
I’d recommend getting a MW turnout sheet and a light to medium weight stable sheet. Then, you can add some warmth for those cold nights.
Top brands are Horseware Ireland and Weatherbeeta. Most horses, I’ve found, either fit into one brand or the other. Horseware had the Amigo line and goes up in price to Rhinos, then their Rambos, which are very expensive, but completely worth it! They last forever. Weatherbeeta might be a better choice for you, though, as they normally fit stockier, QH-types. They sell a cheaper line, Saxon, which are good quality, and very affordable.
vtosaddlery.com has the best prices on everything.
Good blanket brands that are not too expensive are:
Baker
Pessoa
Rider’s International
Weatherbeeta

[TIP] Since your mare has a thick coat, make sure she does not over heat. If she does, her pores will open up because her body is telling her that she is hot and all that cold will get inside and she will freeze, causing a possible major sickeness. Just make sure there is no heaving heat coming off or sweating my sticking your hand under her blanket from the chest part.
