Use a tape measure starting in the middle of the chest, bring it across the widest part of the shoulder, belly, and rump around to the middle of the tail. If your measurement is an odd number, round up. Depending on the size of your quarter horse, you should end up with a size anywhere from 72in to 78in.
put tape measure on neck at the bottom of mane go to the back where the tail starts and this is the size of blanket you will need
If you have a large horse, it’ll be easier to measure if you have someone help you.
Start by placing the end of the measuring tape on the center of your horse’s chest.
With your friend holding the end of the tape measure at the chests center, you will continue to measure around the widest part of your horse’s shoulders, and the widest part of his/her barrel
Continue to measure around his/her hips & flank, and continue on all the way around to the tail.
To get a more accurate measurement, try to put the tape measure in the center of his/her tail.
If you have a horse who measures as an odd number, ie: 73 or 75, you most likely will need to go up to the next even size. If you don’t you could risk the blanket being too tight
If that was confusing, I attached a link:
It depends on what blanket you are buying. If you go with Weatherbetta (which I suggest you do) go with a Landa Rug Sac. The turnout blanket in there fits my 14.3 hand stocky horse and my 16.3h QH perfect! Dont know how that works, but it does! also the blanket is great and super durable. I will never go back to any other kind of blanket after using the Landa Rug Sac.
1. Stand your horse up squarely. Tie him, or ask someone to hold him.
2. Standing on his left, take the end of the tape in your left hand and place it at the point where his neck meets the center of his chest.
3. With your right hand, draw the tape along his left side as far as you can. Make sure the tape crosses the widest part of his shoulder; if you measure too low on the chest, your blanket will be too small. The tape must be level and taut, or you’ll add inches to your final measurement, and end up with a blanket that’s too big.
4. When you’ve reached as far as you can, mark the spot with your right thumb, noting the measurement. Then measure backward from that spot, holding the start of the tape there with your left hand, and again reaching back with your right.
5. Still keeping the tape level and straight, bring it across the point of his buttock (the hindmost point of the quarters, about 10 to 12 inches below the place where the tail joins the body). Stop at the edge of his tail, noting the measurement.
